What Is Local SEO? A Practical Guide for Local Businesses

4 min read Updated By the SkillNewton team

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of making a business visible in searches with local intent, such as "dentist near me" or "CA firm in Lucknow". It centres on a complete, verified Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone details across the web, genuine customer reviews and useful location pages on your website. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence.

Where local results appear

When a search has local intent, Google often shows a map with a short list of businesses, called the local pack, above or among the regular results. The same listings appear in Google Maps. Below them, normal organic results may include your website pages. Local SEO aims to appear in all three places.

  • Local pack: a map with a few business listings, their ratings, hours and directions.
  • Google Maps: searches made directly in the Maps app, often on mobile while someone is nearby.
  • Organic results: your service and location pages ranking like any other web page.

How Google ranks local results

Google states that local rankings are based mainly on three factors. You cannot change your distance from a searcher, but you can strengthen the other two.

FactorWhat it meansWhat you can influence
RelevanceHow well a listing matches the searchAccurate categories, services, descriptions and website content
DistanceHow far the business is from the searcher or the location in the queryLittle, apart from listing a correct address or service area
ProminenceHow well known and trusted the business isReviews, links, mentions and an active, complete profile

Setting up your Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that powers your appearance in the local pack and Maps. You manage it from your Google account, either in Google Search or Maps directly.

  1. Claim or create the profile using the exact business name you use on signage and documents.
  2. Verify ownership. Google chooses the available methods, which can include a short video recording of the premises, a phone call or text, email or a postcard.
  3. Pick a precise primary category, such as "Bakery" rather than "Food", then add relevant secondary categories.
  4. Add complete details: hours, special holiday hours, phone number, website, services or products and attributes.
  5. Upload real photos of the shopfront, interior, team and work.
  6. Set a service area if you visit customers, such as a plumber in Noida. Service-area businesses without a shop can hide their street address.
  7. Publish updates about offers, events or new services to keep the profile active.

Keeping NAP details consistent

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Mentions of these details on other sites are called citations, for example on business directories, marketplaces and industry listings. When they conflict, search engines and customers are less sure which details are correct.

After any move or number change, update your profile first, then your website and the main directories.

Earning and managing reviews

Reviews influence both prominence and whether people choose you. Ask every satisfied customer for a review, share a direct review link on receipts or WhatsApp messages, and reply to reviews politely, including negative ones.

  • Do not offer discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews; Google's policies prohibit incentives.
  • Do not ask only happy customers while filtering out others (review gating).
  • Do not write reviews for yourself or for competitors.
  • Respond to complaints with facts and an offer to resolve the issue offline.

Location pages on your website

Your website supports the profile. Create a clear contact page with the same NAP details and an embedded map, and build service or location pages only where you genuinely serve customers. Each page should contain unique information, such as local projects, staff, directions or area-specific services. Near-identical pages that only swap the city name are treated as doorway pages.

Add LocalBusiness markup, explained in the structured data guide, and use keyword research to learn how people in your area phrase their searches, including Hindi or Hinglish queries.

Tracking local performance

The Performance section of your Business Profile shows searches, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Add UTM parameters to the website link on your profile so that visits appear separately in GA4. Check rankings from different parts of the city, because results change with the searcher's location.

Common mistakes

  • Stuffing keywords or city names into the business name on the profile.
  • Using a virtual office or residential address where the business does not actually serve customers.
  • Leaving hours outdated during festivals and holidays, which frustrates customers who arrive at a closed shop.
  • Creating dozens of city pages with the same text and only the city name changed.
  • Ignoring negative reviews instead of replying calmly and helpfully.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a website for local SEO?

A Business Profile can appear without one, but a website gives Google more information about your services and gives customers a place to learn more and contact you.

Can I have more than one Business Profile?

Only if you have separate physical locations that each serve customers in person. Several profiles for one location break Google's guidelines.

Why does my business show for some nearby searches and not others?

Distance changes with every searcher, and relevance changes with every query. Results in one neighbourhood can differ from those a few kilometres away.

Do local backlinks help?

Yes. Links and mentions from local news sites, associations and partners add to prominence. Our off-page SEO guide explains how to earn them.
